Challenges
Creating a new logo for the Richmond Shoreline Alliance was a challenge because it needed to reflect the group’s wide-ranging mission, including protecting natural habitats, promoting environmental justice, and bringing the community together, while also visually representing key elements like waterbirds, the Richmond hills, and the shoreline. The design also marked a thoughtful shift from a hand-drawn style to a more official, polished look that better matches the Alliance’s growing role in public advocacy and environmental work.
My Approach
Creating a new logo for the Richmond Shoreline Alliance meant finding a balance between honoring their mission to protect natural habitats, promote environmental justice, and unite the community, while also looking ahead to a more optimistic future for the shoreline. I aimed to design a logo that could visually advocate for the Alliance and reflect who they are, incorporating elements like waterbirds, the Richmond hills, and the shoreline. The shift from a hand-drawn style to a more polished, official look highlights the organization's growing presence and impact.
Results
Through on-site research, direct observation, and collaboration with the Richmond Shoreline Alliance team, I developed a deeper understanding of the organization’s mission and values. These insights led to a final logo that captures the unique character of the shoreline while visually supporting the Alliance’s vision for a more vibrant, resilient, and unified future.
Future Plans
The future for the Richmond shoreline is bright. The new logo represents an investment in the Alliance’s brand and public perception, embracing a more professional and established identity that helps bolster support and recognition. It reflects a hopeful vision where the shoreline’s natural beauty and community resilience are protected and celebrated for years to come.
Conclusion
The Alliance focuses on cleaning up toxic sites, advocating for sea level rise adaptation, and amplifying frontline communities’ voices. I volunteered to create the logo as a visual representation of their dedication to restoring the shoreline and building a legacy of environmental stewardship and community resilience. Through these efforts, the Alliance aims to honor the shoreline’s history while fostering a sustainable and inclusive future.
